Working too hard? Hardly working? Both?

Most people are in one camp or the other, but some are in both.

You are either working harder than ever. You're working longer hours. Taking less days off. Working into the night. You dream about and wake up thinking about work. You're pivoting, innovating and being creative about how to block enough of the societal noise so you don't get thrown off course.


You're hardly working. You can't focus. Your thoughts are occupied by so many things. You're worried about the future, your family and what's coming down the pike. You don't know what's what and working is something you can muster up enough effort to do the minimal amount needed.

Then there's those of us who vacillate between the two states. Some days we're giving it our all. Some days it takes everything to get out of bed and do a single sales call…

None of this is good or bad. None of it is right or wrong. It's just where you are currently and it's all ok. If you've got some commitment to changing how it is (hard workers – work less, hardly working – work more), we've got some ideas for you…

If you're working too hard, here are tips for you to slow down and still get things done:

  1. Eat slowly. Take your time and chew and be present during meals. Don't work while eating.
  2. Do nothing for 10-15 minutes after waking up. No phone. No devices. Just be, even if you need to wake up 15 minutes earlier to do this – try it.
  3. Connect with someone you don't need to connect with and share and listen. Even if its only for 10 minutes. Be present the whole 10 minutes.
  4. Pick 30 minutes each day to do one thing and one thing alone. No multi-tasking. Just the one thing.
  5. Meditate, pray, chant – whatever your spiritual practice – find 10 minutes a day to engage in it.

For those of you who can't seem to work, here are tips for you to get more effective or focused:

  1. Set up a work space where only work is allowed. No social media, no texting with friends. Work only. If you need to do something not work-related, step out of the space before doing it.
  2. Create a plan for the next day before you go to sleep each day to be productive. You may not do everything in your plan right out of the gates, but setting yourself up by planning will increase the likelihood of you being in action.
  3. Start saying no to people. You don't have to say yes to things that derail you from being productive.
  4. Surround yourself with people who are working. If the people you're most in touch with are also not working, you'll be less likely to work.
  5. Track and Review your performance. The more related to the reality of your performance that you are, the more likely you are to do something about it if its dis-satisfactory to you.
